What’s the difference between fridge light bulbs and regular bulbs?

People looking to find the differences between appliance light bulbs and regular bulbs often end up with three features: bulb type, bulb shape, and size and bulb base.

Bulb type

It’s no secret that regular bulbs can be classified into a number of different types. For example, incandescent, halogen, FCL, and LED are all common types in daily use, with each having its merits and drawbacks.
While fridge bulbs have few bulb-type options. Its cold environment makes it impossible to apply halogen bulbs to a fridge. Halogen bulb needs to be at a certain temperature to achieve its full performance, but people will not let the fridge door keep open for a long time to wait till it reaches its fullest output. In this case, incandescent and led become the best options as these two types can better adapt to the low temperature.

Shape and size

The shapes and sizes of fridge light bulbs and regular light bulbs also vary greatly. A common fridge light is A15 bulb shape instead of bulb shape A19, which is one of the typical shapes of the regular bulbs that we use for illumination. As A19 means the bulb’s diameter is one-eighth of an inch, the A15 bulb is slightly smaller than the A19 bulb. As a refrigerator is designed to store food, so refrigerator light bulbs are not supposed to occupy much space.

Bulb base

Regular light bulbs have many light bulb base types, Edison screw-in base, bayonet base, and bi-pin base, to name a few. But incandescent and led refrigerator light bulbs are often screwed in base with E26 and E12 led light bulbs much common in the market.

Could we use regular led A15 bulbs to replace a bridge bulb?

As is mentioned above, regular bulbs and refrigerator bulbs are too different to replace each other. But could we use regular led A15 bulbs to replace the broken bridge bulb? Well, the answer is you are not supposed to do so. Refrigerator bulbs have some extra features that a regular bulb doesn’t have.

Fridge bulbs are designed for refrigerator illumination and thus have the ability to bear a fridge’s low temperature and the ability to work well in an environment that the temperature will suddenly change, especially in commercial refrigerators. Typically, an appliance bulb is built to work well between -40℃ and 80℃, while a regular bulb will pop and broken in such a temperature environment.

Furthermore, when opening the door, a sudden temperature change will generate moisture and water in the fridge, and thus a fridge bulb often comes with an excellent moist resistant cover, protecting the whole bulb from moisture and water. When choosing a fridge replacement bulb, it is necessary to choose a high IP value of at least IP65 for your fridge bulb. While a regular indoor led light bulb often featuring an IP20 rating, which may seem a little trivial in waterproofing.

Things to consider when you are choosing the replacement fridge bulb.

Choose a better bulb type

Traditional bulbs for refrigerators are incandescent bulbs, which have a lifespan of about 750 hours to 2,000 hours. They have a high color rendering index but they consume more power than FCL and LED bulbs.

While today LED refrigerator light bulbs have become the trend. As the technology of LED lighting growing rapidly, the cost of led light bulb is decreasing and led fridge bulb is performing much better than incandescent. LED fridge bulbs consume less power than incandescent when at the same brightness and have a longer lifespan of up to 5,000 hours.

Choose the correct watt

If the original bulb in your refrigerator is a led bulb, the bulb is most 40 watts, while an incandescent bulb is 60 wattage. A 40 watt led bulb could be used to replace the 60watt incandescent, but a higher-watt incandescent bulb is not the option. Before purchasing the replacement fridge bulb, be sure to choose the correct wattage.

Now that you've learned what bulbs are most suitable for your fridge, and the key parameters that matter of a fridge light bulb, you can now start to explore the vast options available for refrigerators!
